The BFG

Written by Roald Dahl – reviewed by Circe Aguiar

The BFG tells the magical story of Sophie, a young orphan girl who is taken from her bed one night by a giant! But this giant is not like the others—he’s kind, gentle, and a little bit funny. He is the Big Friendly Giant, or BFG for short, and he spends his days catching dreams and blowing them into children’s bedrooms to help them have happy dreams.

While the other giants in the land are scary and dangerous—they eat humans— the BFG is different. He hates being mean and wants to protect Sophie from harm. Together, Sophie and the BFG come up with a brave plan to stop the terrible giants from eating children. They seek help from the Queen of England, and with courage and friendship, they work to make the world safer.

This story is full of imagination, warmth, and humor. Roald Dahl’s playful use of language, including the BFG’s funny way of speaking, makes the story feel alive and joyful. Themes of kindness, bravery, and standing up for what is right shine through the book. The BFG celebrates friendship between unlikely companions and the magic that can happen when we believe in good over evil. It’s a perfect read for children and adults alike, reminding us to dream big and be brave.
