Matilda

Fantasy by Roald Dahl – reviewed by Circe Aguiar

Matilda tells the story of a special girl named Matilda Wormwood, who is extraordinarily smart and loves reading books. Unfortunately, her parents don’t understand her and often ignore or criticize her. Matilda feels lonely and misunderstood at home, but her love of learning strengthens her. When she starts school, she meets her kind and supportive teacher, Miss Honey, who quickly sees how excellent Matilda is.

At school, Matilda faces the terrifying headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who plays her cruelty and injustice to the children, by using fear and punishment to control the school. But Miss Trunchbull doesn’t scare Matilda, who with her clever mind and even a touch of magical powers, finds ways to stand up to Miss Trunchbull and protect her friends.

The story goes beyond a clever girl’s bravery. With a profound sense of justice, the power of knowledge and kindness, Matilda’s journey shows that you can change your world even when people around you don’t believe in you. Roald Dahl’s playful, sharp writing and Quentin Blake’s lively drawings make the book full of humor and heart. Matilda encourages readers to love learning and believe in themselves, no matter their obstacles.
